![]() ![]() If it were up to me, I could pitch ten games that I'd rather play over Catan. If you have people in your circles who are stubbornly stuck on Catan, investing in C&K allows you to have a richer experience, and it also introduces them to a more mechanically-rich game - one that might make them more likely to move onto other games. I'm simply saying, if you don't have the luxury of a dedicated gaming group rich in the hobby, it's useful knowing that there is a version of Catan that can be quite enjoyable. But sometimes, you're just that annoying guy who's too snobby to play everyone's favorite. In some cases, you can use this as a teaching opportunity to broaden their interests and teach them new games. Catan is extremely ubiquitous, and despite the demographics of this subreddit, a lot of casual players still don't have much experience playing anything beyond it. Cities and Knights is good, but if you've already moved past Catan, you're right that your money would probably be better-spent on other games.īut it's not that simple for everyone. If you have an established group who has moved past Catan and you're content playing more satisfying games, then yeah, of course it's more practical to just ignore the extra buy-in you need to make Catan good. I'm a little late on this, but my answer is yes and no. C&K is about the best expansion I could ask for. Explorers and Pirates is actually pretty great, but really does feel like a totally different game. Explorers and Pirates is alright, but the add-ons either feel too game-changing, or not impactful enough. Seafarers is good, but it's basically just a bigger board. To me, it's pretty much everything that OG Catan is, just better. And you also have more choices when you get blocked in or fucked by bad rolls. Do you want to go the traditional route and have a balanced spread across resources and numbers? Do you want to go all-in on commodities to win through a development card strategy? All the same strategies are there, they're just better. I think C&K is actually the expansion that does the best job at "upgrading" Catan into a competent game, while not changing it so much that it feels like something different.Īll the core aspects of the game are there - you're collecting points by strategically building out across the board and optimizing your production. r/tabletopgamedesign - Designer's subreddit.r/boardgameexchange - selling/buying/trading games.( Learn how to add your ratings) Related Sites & Subreddits Vote here! | See Calendar /r/boardgames Top 10 for May 2020!
